Today, May 19, 2025, President Trump signed the TAKE IT DOWN Act into law, establishing the first-ever federal protections for survivors of tech-enabled sexual abuse. The law makes it a federal crime to knowingly share or threaten to share nonconsensual intimate images (NCII)—including AI-generated deepfakes—and requires platforms to remove them within 48 hours of a survivor’s verified request.
TAKE IT DOWN passed in a landslide of bipartisan support, marking a major milestone in protecting survivors and creating a safer internet for everyone. But while the ink is dry, the work is far from over.
What’s Next? RAINN’s Challenge to Tech Companies
The law gives online platforms up to one year to implement these protections. But survivors—many of whom have lived with the trauma of having their private images weaponized—have already waited long enough.
"We know how quickly harm can happen online,” said RAINN President Scott Berkowitz. “Survivors have seen their images spread across the internet in minutes. So we’re asking tech companies: what are you waiting for?”
RAINN, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, is calling on the tech industry to act immediately. Major platforms like Meta, Google, TikTok, X, and Discord have the talent, tools, and resources to make Take It Down work—not in a year, but now.
By this Independence Day, July 4, we challenge all major platforms to:
Launch clear and accessible tools for survivors to request the removal of nonconsensual intimate images.
Implement systems that proactively prevent reposts and duplicates.
Provide real-time accountability for how reports are handled.
“This isn’t about building something new—it’s about ending something harmful,” said Berkowitz. “We’re calling on platforms to show survivors, and all internet users, that their freedom from abuse matters.”
This July 4, give survivors something to celebrate:
Independence from tech-enabled abusers. Freedom from tech-enabled sexual abuse for all.
