  • Something happened to me. Where should I go for medical care after sexual assault?

    After a sexual assault, you may wish to seek medical attention to treat any possible injuries and to check for injuries you may not be able see.

    You can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800.656.HOPE (4673). You'll be connected to a trained staff member from a local sexual assault service prover in your area. They will direct you to the appropriate local health facility that can care for survivors of sexual assault. Some service providers may be able to send a trained advocate to accompany you. Learn more about receiving medical attention and having a sexual assault forensic exam, sometimes called a rape kit.

  • How can I find support in my community after sexual assault?

    It's helpful to have support in your own community after a sexual assault. Local service providers make it easy for you to access care, and they are knowledgeable about the laws in your area and local resources that can assist you.

  • I am thinking about ending my life. Can someone help me?

    If you are thinking about suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800.273.TALK (8255) 24/7, or chat online using the Lifeline Crisis Chat.

  • I am in the military and need to talk to someone about what happened.

    Members of DoD community affected by sexual assault can access DoD Safe Helpline for live, one-on-one support. The service is confidential, anonymous, secure, and available worldwide, 24/7. Call 877-995-5247 or visit safehelpline.org for support and to learn more.

  • How can I help someone I care about?

    If a loved one has survived sexual assault, it can be challenging to know how to help. Learn more about responding to a survivor and taking care of yourself during this time. Consider sharing the National Sexual Assault Hotline so they can talk with someone who is trained to help.

    The National Sexual Assault Hotline can help you with a range of issues from finding a local health facility, to referrals for long term support, or simply providing someone to talk you through what happened. While the RAINN cannot provide legal help, the National Sexual Assault Hotline may be able to direct you to resources in your community that can provide support, like a local sexual assault service provider.

Getting Involved or Volunteering with RAINN

  • How do I get involved or become a volunteer for RAINN?

    Thanks for your interest in supporting survivors. There are many ways you can get involved with RAINN, from fundraising, to working with survivors on the National Sexual Assault Hotline, to sharing your story of survival.   • How can I volunteer for the National Sexual Assault Hotline or become a rape crisis counselor or advocate?

    Volunteers are essential to operating the National Sexual Assault Hotline, both online and over the phone.

    You can volunteer to help survivors of sexual violence by lending your time and skills to a local sexual assault service provider in your area. Whether you’re answering calls to the National Sexual Assault Hotline or providing critical office support, you can make a big difference for survivors in your community.

    You can also join a national team of volunteers who provide immediate support to those in need on the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline. To become a support specialist, volunteers go through an extensive training program that is currently offered in Washington, DC or NYC.

    We partner with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers to help survivors across the country. Learn more about applying to be an affiliate or referral organization for the National Sexual Assault Hotline. Sexual assault service providers that complete the application and approval process are listed on centers.rainn.org. They can also be listed on volopps.rainn.org to highlight any volunteer opportunities.

    At this time we are not accepting unsolicited requests from organizations to be highlighted on rainn.org unless they meet the criteria for an affiliate or referral organization as outlined above.

  • How can my organization answer calls to the National Sexual Assault Hotline?

    We partner with more than 1,000 sexual assault service providers to help survivors across the country. These organizations are listed on rainn.org in a searchable database.   • Can RAINN promote, review, or endorse my book, film, or project?

    Due to the large volume of requests we receive, we are not able to review, endorse, or promote all creative works, such as books, films, artwork, poetry, and music.

    RAINN encourages students, journalists, and community organizers to share the National Sexual Assault Hotline to connect audiences with the help they need. We also encourage sharing educational information from rainn.org that can help change the way people think about and respond to sexual violence. If you include content from rainn.org in your article, paper, essay, website, or project, we ask just ask that you properly cite RAINN as the source. For web-based writing, please include a link back to the original content from rainn.org.

  • How do I cite statistics found on rainn.org?

    Statistics on rainn.org have been collected from a number of different research studies—the citations for these can be found in the footnotes at the bottom of the page. When citing statistics from rainn.org, be sure to include the citation from the corresponding study.

  • I am a journalist reporting on sexual violence, can I interview someone from RAINN?

  • Can I use RAINN’s graphics, or banners?

  • Can someone from RAINN attend my event or fundraiser?

    We are grateful that you have decided to raise money for RAINN to support survivors of sexual violence. Due to the large volume of requests and our location in Washington, DC, we are not able to attend all events.

    If you would like a survivor of sexual violence to speak at your event, you can submit a request to host someone from the Speakers Bureau. The Speakers Bureau is made up of more than 1,500 survivors from all over the country who have volunteered to share their stories.
