RAINN’s Long-Time Musical Partner Raises Funds for Hotline

The creation of the National Sexual Assault Hotline in 1994 was a landmark development in crisis services. For the first time, survivors of sexual violence had a single number (800.656.HOPE) they could call to receive support after sexual assault. A new challenge emerged: getting the word out. RAINN received early support from the entertainment industry. Headlining artists and actors filmed PSAs for the hotline and gave on-stage plugs to get the word out about the new service. Among the first and most loyal supporters was legendary rock band Toad the Wet Sprocket and its lead singer, Glen Phillips.

“Having Glen and the band support RAINN—from the very beginning—was critical to the success of the National Sexual Assault Hotline,” said RAINN’s president and founder, Scott Berkowitz. “He welcomed RAINN at every show, and was tireless in talking about the hotline to media and fans. To have such a respected artist talking about sexual violence, and about RAINN, made a big difference. Millions of people learned about the issue, and tens of thousands of survivors reached out for help for the first time.”

This year, Toad the Wet Sprocket is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its platinum studio album “fear” with a national tour and a fundraising campaign for RAINN. The band is asking fans to donate $25 to commemorate the anniversary event and support the critical services for survivors. The campaign runs through September 12.

Glen Phillips, lead singer for the band, is proud of Toad’s history partnering with RAINN. "RAINN has been serving survivors of sexual violence in need for more than twenty years now, connecting people with support through the National Sexual Assault Hotline," said Phillips. "We are proud to be able to collaborate with them again on our tour this summer."

Fans can catch Toad the Wet Sprocket on their #fear25 tour through October 23, at venues across the country.
