NLC Member Highlight: Ashley Judd

Each month, RAINN features a member of its National Leadership Council (NLC). The NLC is a group of dedicated individuals who have shown their commitment to RAINN’s mission of supporting survivors and ending sexual violence. This month we checked in with actor and humanitarian, Ashley Judd.

How can we all be better supporters and advocates for survivors in our lives?

By listening in an open-ended fashion. Let survivors tell their stories in whole, or in part, whenever it feels right for them. Everyday occurrences may remind someone of a painful experience, and being an emphatic and alert witness to another’s process, however messy, allows the survivor to feel seen, validated, and in some measure, healed.

Why did you want to be a part of RAINN’s National Leadership Council?

RAINN is the national leader and voice for survivor advocacy and guidance to resources. It isn’t right or helpful to point out a problem without highlighting a solution, and RAINN helps survivors find those solutions.

How has your passion for ending sexual violence influenced your art, advocacy, work, etc.?

Oh, this is my life. As a survivor, I am committed to doing everything I can to make sure no one else has to walk through the violation and trauma I experienced. Sexual violence in many ways shaped my childhood and I have dedicated myself to healing from it. My healing journey is my life’s purpose. Therefore, sharing my personal journey with the millions of folks who long for freedom from sexual violence is my passion and raison d’être.

Think you can’t change a law? Think again.
