Critical information about safety planning, rape kits and trauma recovery is now available in Spanish on rainn.org, providing important information about sexual violence to the 37.6 million people in the United States who primarily speak Spanish. These new resources follow the launch of RAINN’s 24/7 Spanish-language support services via the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline at rainn.org/es.
Until recently, this top content on RAINN’s website was available exclusively in English. “With the expanded Spanish-language hotline services, RAINN saw the need to provide this important information to Spanish speaking survivors and their loved ones,” said Jennifer Marsh, RAINN’s vice president of victim services. RAINN’s bilingual support specialists can now point Spanish-speaking survivors and their loved ones to more in-depth reading material during chats on the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline.
“We know that survivors who speak Spanish may have a preferred language for speaking, reading, and writing,” said Candice Lopez, director of the National Sexual Assault Hotline. “We want to meet them where they are — by giving them the choice to access information in the language they prefer.”
Here are some highlights of the new Spanish-language content:
- ¿Qué es un kit para casos de violación? (What is a rape kit?)
- Planificación de la seguridad (Safety planning)
- ¿Cómo puedo proteger a mi hijo del abuso sexual? (How to protect children from sexual assault)
- Después de un asalto/abuso sexual (What to do after an assault)
- Ayúdele a ese ser querido (How to help someone you care about)
- Cuidar de sí mismo después del trauma (Self-care after trauma)
- Consejos prácticos para los sobrevivientes sobre los agotadores medios de comunicación (Tips for consuming media as a survivor)
Marsh added, “We hope that even more survivors will feel comfortable reaching out for help because they have resources available in two different languages.”
If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual violence, it’s not your fault. You are not alone. Help is available 24/7 through the National Sexual Assault Hotline: 800-656-HOPE and online.rainn.org.
