RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE, online.rainn.org y rainn.org/es) in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department of Defense.

FY23 In Review

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As I reflect on the past year, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the incredible strides we have made together. Fiscal Year 2023 has been a transformative period for RAINN, marked by significant achievements and a deepened commitment to our mission of supporting survivors and preventing sexual violence. Your unwavering support has been the cornerstone of our progress, enabling us to champion the good work done by our dedicated team and volunteers.

SUPPORTING SURVIVORS AND ADVANCING SERVICES

One of our most notable accomplishments this year has been the expansion and enhancement of our services for victims.

  • With the generous support of a donor, we added 76 new staff members and trained 319 hotline volunteers. In total, our victim service programs served 304,554 survivors and their loved ones, allowing us to serve over 304,000 visitors, up 9% from the prior year. This growth has enabled us to provide more comprehensive support and foster a collaborative environment for our team members.

  • We launched a brand new hotline platform to provide a more seamless experience for those seeking help. This upgrade, which prioritizes the protection of survivors’ privacy, allows us to provide help through phone, online chat, and text messages.

  • When RAINN launched its online hotline nearly 20 years ago, it was the web’s first secure hotline service. The dedication of RAINN’s Tech team to continuous improvement ensures that we remain at the forefront of innovation in our field.

  • Our National Sexual Assault Hotline (NSAH) saw substantial improvements,  including a reduction in average visitor wait time from 45 minutes to 15 minutes—and we expect the improvements we’ve made to continue lowering that number.  RAINN also improved training for our hotline specialists to enable them to handle the increased demand and specialized needs of minors needing support

RAINN also operates the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Safe Helpline—the sole hotline for members of the military community affected by sexual assault. Three out of 10 victims had not disclosed their assault to anyone before visiting the Safe Helpline.

PROMOTING POLICY AND BUILDING COMMUNITIES

RAINN’s policy work has seen historic victories, with significant legislative achievements at both the state and federal levels. We celebrated the passage of key bills, including Pennsylvania’s House Bill 507, which mandates informed consent for pelvic exams, and Georgia’s Mariam’s Law, which enhances monitoring and restrictions for sex offenders. These milestones are a testament to our relentless advocacy and the power of our collective voice.

New this year was our inaugural Congressional Hill Day in May 2023, bringing together survivors, volunteers, and advocates from across the country to Capitol Hill, where they met with Congressional staff to push for legislative changes to protect survivors and advance avenues of justice. This powerful day of action underscored the importance of survivor voices in shaping public policy and building a community of people committed to creating change.

In our ongoing efforts to support all survivors, we updated the name of our Spanish-language service to Línea de Ayuda Nacional de Abuso Sexual in April. This change, as well as partnerships with Latino/a/e/x organizations and Spanish-language media, have raised awareness and provided support to Spanish-speaking communities.

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE AND SCALING AWARENESS

Our drive to increase public awareness and education about sexual violence and the services we offer to survivors led to several creative partnerships with the media and entertainment industry. Following the January premiere of Surviving R. Kelly III: The Final Chapter, calls to RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline increased by 46%. Many of the survivors who called had never told anyone what happened before speaking with hotline staff.

From the inclusion of the hotline information to script review and language consultation, we worked with more than 20 entertainment programs from networks and streaming services including HBO, Netflix, Lifetime, Hulu, and NBC to change the narrative on sexual violence. In addition to bringing RAINN into the conversation with major media outlets like AP, Salon, Washington Post and TIME, RAINN and the National Sexual Assault Hotline appeared in more than 50,000 media mentions and our social audience grew 55% over the prior year, ensuring that more people who need RAINN can know about and find RAINN when it matters most.

We have also expanded our consulting and training services, a critical pathway for us to scale educated awareness of sexual violence and misconduct in companies, schools, and organizations around the country. This year, we conducted 100 discrete client education sessions and launched four new client-branded hotlines, demonstrating our commitment to creating safer communities and organizations.

LOOKING FORWARD

As we move forward, we remain dedicated to our mission, inspired by the resilience of survivors and the tireless efforts of our team and supporters. Together, we will continue to make strides in preventing sexual violence and supporting those affected.

Thank you for your unwavering support and belief in our cause.

With gratitude and hope,

– Scott Berkowitz, President & Founder
