RAINN Response to Verdicts in Favor of E. Jean Carroll
Washington, D.C. (May 9, 2023) – RAINN released the following statement after a Manhattan jury voted to hold Donald Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation of E. Jean Carroll:
“We thank E. Jean Carroll, who will inspire survivors to come forward to tell their stories and face perpetrators. This case demonstrates that all perpetrators, no matter how powerful, can and will be held accountable. For those watching coverage of this case and looking for support, RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline is ready with free, confidential, and 24/7 support at 800.656.HOPE (4673) and hotline.RAINN.org.” – Scott Berkowitz, president and founder, RAINN
Carroll’s civil case was enabled by New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which RAINN’s policy team advocated for and helped pass. This legislation extended the time period to pursue a case, allowing survivors to have the time they need to heal before having to make a decision about pursuing a legal case.
