SongFest is a series of events and competitions that focus fraternities and sororities around a single philanthropy, with a different charity benefitting each year. Fraternities and sororities compete for points by raising money for charity, attending speaking events, raising awareness, holding contests and competitions, and more.
This year, Kent State University has chosen to benefit the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN). SongFest 2013 for RAINN culminates on November 9, 2013, with a night of song and skit competitions where winners for each category (fundraising, participation, song and dance performances) are announced.
RAINN is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization and carries out critical programs to help survivors, prevent sexual violence and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.
Sexual violence touches us all, whether directly or indirectly. Unfortunately, this crime disproportionately affects college students, who are 4x more likely to be sexually assaulted than any other age group. Men are victims, too — in fact, 10% of all victims are male. Survivors of sexual violence are 3x more likely to suffer from depression, 26x more likely to abuse drugs and 4x more likely to contemplate suicide.
This is your opportunity to help reduce sexual violence on your campus, and to ensure that survivors know that help is available through RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline (1.800.656.HOPE and online.rainn.org ). Organizers are encouraged to raise awareness on campus, throughout the Kent community, and beyond.
In addition to supporting RAINN’s existing programs to help survivors, educate the public and improve sexual assault laws and policies, your dollars will support the development of a new self-care app for survivors.
With the self-care app, survivors will be able to track their moods and feelings, create a personal self-care plan, learn breathing and relaxation exercises, and find short-term and long-term support. The app will be entirely confidential and accessible anytime, anywhere — and users won’t need to be connected to the web to use it. Like the award-winning app RAINN created for survivors in the US military, this new app will help thousands of people recover from their attack.
Below, you will find updated information on SongFest activities and events that will earn points for your fraternity or sorority. Points will be based on dollars raised and participation in the activities. Donations from outside your fraternity or sorority are welcome, and can be made directly at donate.rainn.org/init4rainn . Donors will be prompted to select your group from a dropdown menu when making their contribution. For donations that are not related to a specific chapter, the “Other” option may be used.

Warning: This film includes scenes with graphic violence, which have the potential to trigger difficult memories for some viewers. A volunteer from the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline will be present at the screening and information for the National Sexual Assault Hotlines (800.656.HOPE and online.rainn.org) will be available.
November 6th: Denim Day
Normally, Denim Day is an international day in April where people protest the results of a 1990s Italian rape case (explained below). We will be hosting our own Denim Day on Wednesday, November 6. Come in your denim and letters and check in at the Songfest table! Times TBD.
In Rome, in 1997, a 45-year old driving instructor was accused of rape. He sexually assaulted an 18-year-old girl during her driving lesson and threatened her life if she told. Later that night, she told her parents and they agreed to help her press charges. While the alleged rapist was convicted and sentenced, the Italian Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 1998 because the victim wore tight jeans. It was argued that she must have had to help her rapists remove her jeans and that the act was thus consensual.
Every year since 1999, Peace Over Violence has organized a national Denim Day. Denim Day is a sexual assault prevention education campaign that takes place every April, nationwide. People are encouraged to wear jeans to raise awareness around rape and sexual assault.
On November 6th, do your part to protest against the misconceptions surrounding sexual assault and wear jeans!
For points, wear your jeans and/or SongFest t-shirt and check-in at the student center.
