Tell Congress to Improve Access to Medical Care for Survivors

At hospitals around the country, an alarming lack of sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) means some survivors seeking a forensic exam--also known as a "rape kit" exam--are forced to travel hours to find the help they need. Some have nowhere to go at all.

Congress can fix this by passing a bipartisan bill that would expand access to medical forensic examinations, help develop national standards of care for survivors of sexual assault, and improve access to care for Native and rural communities.

Every survivor of sexual assault deserves to be treated by a medical professional who can provide them with expert, trauma-informed care. But the current lack of federal support for comprehensive care for survivors means too many people are unable to access the help they need. As your constituent, I ask you to help ensure that every survivor—regardless of geographical location—has access to these critical health services.

Specifically, I urge you to please support the Survivors’ Access to Supportive Care Act, which would provide guidance and support to states and hospitals providing medical forensic sexual assault exams and treatment of survivors.
