Get Local Medical Help
RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline connects survivors to local sexual assault service providers who are trained to offer support and resources. These local-to-you providers can help you find a convenient clinic or hospital that’s set up to help survivors of sexual violence. Your service provider may even be able to connect you with an advocate who can guide you through the medical care process.
What Is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)?
A SANE is a registered nurse who is trained to provide comprehensive, trauma-informed, age-appropriate, culturally sensitive care to survivors of sexual assault. These specialists may also be called “forensic nurse examiners.”
Physicians and other qualified care providers may use one of these titles:
- Sexual assault forensic examiner
- Sexual assault examiner (Indian Health Services)
- Sexual assault medical forensic examiner (military)
How a SANE Can Help
Your SANE will check your body for injuries and help you make the best aftercare decisions for your physical and mental health.
If you choose to undergo a sexual assault forensic exam (SAFE), your SANE will collect forensic evidence samples from your body and belongings. Should you decide to involve law enforcement and your case goes to trial, the SANE can appear in court and give expert testimony.
What Is a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)?
A SART is a community-based team comprised of forensic examiners, hospital personnel, sexual assault victim advocates, law enforcement officials, prosecutors, judges, and other professionals trained to assist survivors of sexual violence.
Reach out to RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline to find out if there’s a SART in your area:
