RAINN relies heavily on volunteers to raise the funds necessary to operate the National Sexual Assault Hotline and Online Hotline, educate the public, and pursue public policies that will bring more rapists to jusstice. These generous folks are known as RAINNMakers. It's a great way to leverage your own support and introduce friends and family to the issue of sexual violence and the need for RAINN's programs.
Putting the Money You Raise to Good Use
RAINN spends more than 84% of donations directly on sexual assault programs. Worth magazine says that RAINN's efficiency and effectiveness are among the reasons they selected RAINN as one of "America's 100 Best Charities."
What do RAINNMakers Do?
There are a variety of ways to help raise money for RAINN. You get to pick how you are best able to help. Here are some possibilities:
- Host a small event for your friends or family.
- Create a large fundraising event.
- Ask friends and colleagues for contributions (no event necessary).
- Raise money from local businesses.
- Organize a local run or walk.
- Come up with your own idea — be as creative as you like.
Common Questions about becoming a RAINNMaker
I've never raised money before. Is it difficult?
Raising money doesn't have to be hard, but we understand that it can be intimidating, especially if you've never done it before. Just keep it simple. If you are holding an event, invite people who care about you and care about preventing sexual assault and you'll be amazed how easy it can be.
Do I have to host an event?
You do not have to host an event, although it is a great way to introduce others to RAINN and encourage them to support our work. There are also lots of ways to raise funds without holding an event — it can be as simple as talking individually with friends and family and asking them to make a donation.
Can't I Just Make a Donation?
Of course. Even if fundraising isn't your thing, we welcome your support. You can donate online or by mail or phone. (FYI, one of the most effective ways to raise money is to let your friends and family know that you have made a donation to RAINN. Once they understand how important our work is to you, many will be moved to make their own donation to demonstrate their affection for you.)
Will RAINN Help Me Organize My Event?
RAINNMakers are generally responsible for organizing their own events. We will provide you with our RAINNMaker Kit to help you with the process of planning an event. And, if you ever have questions or want some feedback on ideas, we're here to help. Contact us at membership@rainn.org or 202.544.3561. We can also provide you with informational materials about RAINN to distribute. And if you are unsure about how to ask people to make donations, we can provide you with a sample script.
Will RAINN Help Me Cover the Expensese of My Event?
Because we are a non-profit organization, we are unable to provide financial assistance for events. This allows us to allocate as much money as possible to our programs. But an event can often be planned with very little cost. One of the most effective kinds of events is to have a small group over to your house for coffee and conversation.
