Public Policy Associate / Specialist

Public Policy Activities

RAINN monitors and analyzes federal and state regulations and legislation relating to sexual assault. RAINN educates Members of Congress about issues of importance to rape victims and works collaboratively with allied organizations to advance an anti-sexual assault agenda. RAINN led a successful two-year effort to draft and secure passage of the DNA provisions of the "Justice for All Act of 2004," and maximizing the criminal justice use of DNA technology remains a top priority for RAINN.

About the Position

The Public Policy Associate/Specialist will work under the supervision of RAINN's VP of Public Policy to help advance RAINN's anti-sexual assault policy agenda. This is a full-time position, on-site at RAINN's offices in Northwest Washington, DC.

Responsibilities Include

  • Participate in various lobbying efforts for appropriations, anti-crime, and women's advocacy issues
  • Act as liaison with staff from Capitol Hill and federal government bodies
  • Attend Congressional briefings/hearings and monitor, research and track federal activity
  • Draft & create materials for RAINN's Policy website & draft action alerts, fact sheets, and legislative updates
  • Contact offices to set up meetings and obtain needed information to assist the VP of Public Policy
  • Organize events i.e. RAINN Congressional briefings/ hearings, press conferences, and receptions
  • Manage and train Public Policy department interns

Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. required in public policy, political science, criminology/criminal justice, women's studies or related field
  • At least one year Capitol Hill work/internship experience
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of government relations & the legislative process
  • Knowledge of and commitment to women's issues and law enforcement issues
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Excellent research and organization skills
